Minimum Requirements
Applications are invited for a tenure track position as Assistant Professor in Marine Chemistry, starting July 1st, 2021. The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, is a graduate department with M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Biological, Chemical, Physical and Geological Oceanography. A Ph.D. degree is required, and since English and Spanish are the official languages, knowledge of both languages is desirable.

We are open to a broad range of specialties, but are particularly interested in candidates with a background in Carbonate Geochemistry, Biogeochemistry, Chemical Ecology, Natural Products Chemistry, and/or Marine Pollution, and with a good record of research, teaching and publications in peer-reviewed journals. The selected applicant should have excellent written and oral communication skills, and be able to take advantage of the Magueyes Island Marine Laboratory’s unique location, with easy access to all tropical coastal marine communities, mesophoitic communities, and deep-water environments.


Duties
DUTIES

Teaching requirements include an introductory graduate level course in Chemical Oceanography and additional graduate level and advanced undergraduate courses in the candidate’s area of specialty. The candidate is expected to complement existing areas of expertise and develop collaborative research programs both within and outside the Department (See: www.uprm.edu/cima).

The position requires an organized and mature professional who is motivated and energetic and enjoys interacting with students and collaborators. The candidate must be committed to excellence in teaching at the graduate level including the creation of new courses, when necessary, and supervise Master’s and Ph.D. students. The successful candidate is expected to actively pursue external funding to support his/her research activities, develop an active research program in the area of specialization, publish original research in specialized peer-reviewed journals, and participate in other departmental activities and committees. The regular workload at the Department of Marine Sciences is twelve (12) credits, according to UPR regulations, divided among teaching and research. This work- load may be adjusted to fit the needs of the department and the researcher. Salary can be augmented with external funding.

The successful candidate will teach Chemical Oceanography CMOQ 6615, a core course of the department required by certification for all students. The candidate is expected to modernize the contents of the course as well as develop new related courses under the discipline of Chemical Oceanography. At the same time, the candidate will optimize degree requirements and remove barriers to reduce time to graduation. The candidate is expected to broaden educational opportunities by establishing collaborative interdisciplinary programs across departments, faculties, local and international institutions (Applied Ocean Sciences and Marine Engineering, Earth-Ocean interactions, Coastal Zone Management, etc.). All these activities will improve the department’s graduate academic and research quality, and benefit students, faculty, the department, and the University of Puerto Rico.
